While associate members, who have attended at least three meetings and/or events, are appointed by the District’s elected supervisors to assist them in their overall mission and goals. Associate members have no voting abilities. On the other hand, the governing body of a soil and water conservation district consists of five elected, nonpartisan supervisors, who serve the county-district wide. (Therefore, Marion Soil and Water Conservation District consists of only Marion County. However services through FDACS and NRCS maybe rendered in neighboring counties.) Supervisors or candidates are elected in a general election to a 4-year term. Vacancies are filled by appointment, by the remaining supervisors, until the next regular election. Supervisors and associate members receive no monetary compensation for their services. Supervisors, however, may be reimbursed for their travel expenses.
Furthermore, the Marion Soil and Water Conservation District’s Budget is partially funded through the Marion County Board of County Commissioners, as well as, through monetary donations and fundraisers. We also receive a small administrative fee for processing FDACS cost share programs. The District’s fiscal year is October 1st thru September 30th; however, funding and contracts for FDACS cost share programs run July 1st thru June 30th.
